In October 2019 Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Vladislav Fedorovich Babenko celebrates his 70th anniversary. On anniversary occasion of V.F. Babenko’s, who is outstanding mathematician and expert in Approximation Theory, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University together with Institute of Mathematics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, is organizing Ukrainian Scientific Conference that will be held in Dnipro on October 3-5, 2019.

«APPROXIMATION THEORY

AND ITS APPLICATION»

Vladislav Fedorovich Babenko was born on October 1, 1949 in Dniprodzerzhinsk. In 1973 he graduated with honors from Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Dnipropetrovsk State University in specialty “Mathematics”, and in 1976 he finished his PhD studies in the same university. In 1977 he defended his PhD thesis “Some optimization problems of approximate integration and interpolation of multivariate functions”. He defended his doctoral thesis “Extremal problems of Approximation Theory and asymmetric norms” at Institute of Mathematics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1989.

V.F. Babenko worked as Assistant, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor of Department of Functions Theory. He received academic status of Associate Professor (1982) and Professor (1990). He was the Head of Department of Mathematical Analysis from 1988 to 2010, and Professor of Department of Mathematical Analysis and Functions Theory in 2010–2014. In 2001 he worked part-time as Leading Scientific Associate at Institute of Mathematics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and from 2002 to 2011 – as Leading Scientific Associate of Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Areas of scientific interests of V.F. Babenko includes such fundamental sections of Mathematical Analysis as Approximation Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Optimal Algorithms Theory, Extremal Problems of Analysis, Wavelet Theory and its Applications, Geometric Modeling. V.F Babenko developed theory of approximation in spaces of integrable functions with asymmetric norms, which made it possible to study problems of the best approximation without constraints and problems of the best one-sided approximation from a unified perspective, as well as to create new methods for solving a series of extremal problems in Approximation Theory. He solved problems of calculating widths and optimizing quadrature formulas on these classes of functions and created new methods for obtaining the Landau-Kolmogorov type inequalities, which became the basis for establishing a series of new sharp inequalities of this type for univariate and multivariate functions. The methods of constructing asymptotically optimal triangulations for interpolation of multivariate functions by piecewise linear splines were developed.

In 2002–2013, he was the Deputy Chair of Specialized scientific council for the defense of PhD theses in specialty 01.01.01 – Mathematical Analysis at Dnipropetrovsk National University, a member of many specialized academic councils for the defense of doctoral theses. For many years he was a member of Expert Council in Mathematics of Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine, a member of editorial boards of International Mathematical Journal “East Journal on Approximations”, magazines “Bulletin of Dnipropetrovsk University. Series: Mathematics”, “Mathematical Modeling”.

He is the author of more than 400 scientific and educational papers, including 3 monographs.

He has prepared 13 Doctors of Philosophy and 3 Doctors of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

V.F. Babenko is Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine (1994), has honored titles “Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine” (1998), “Honored Professor of Dnipropetrovsk National University”. He was awarded the Honorary Diploma of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
